Motivation 4 Safety ('M4S') Behavioural and Results Based Safety Programme
The science of human behaviour is objective and data based we teach your staff how to actually observe employee behaviour and understand the consequences that are reinforcing the behaviour they have observed. We then give them the skills to understand how to change that behaviour to ensure a safer environment by changing the consequences to that employee for behaving unsafely, therefore making a more, safer more efficient organisation.

UK businesses realised the importance of training their workforce to improve safety and many advances have been made in recent years. With the advent of quality accreditation such as ISO 9001 and 90022 many businesses have introduced systems and procedures to ensure that their work is undertaken safely.

Systems and procedures do not change Company performance on their own unless they are followed and in many accidents that occur there was a perfectly acceptable procedure such as a method statement that was not followed. 80twenty have created a programme based upon principles created over 80 years of research in behavioural science, to motivate employees to work safer.

The Motivation 4 Safety (M4S) programme increases the focus on why the people within the business behave the way they do, rather than focusing on strategy and procedures, which experience and data shows only go part of the way to achieving the required results. We also highlight how positive motivation will generate results, whereas historically UK construction relies on a negative approach to safety on site i.e. by pointing out unsafe behaviours often in a way the employee won't like, but we do not praise positive performance, the ratio of positive reinforcement to negative is 1:60 in construction when behavioural science and psychologists research has shown that the best way to motivate is with a ratio of 4:1, it is not unusual therefore that motivation for safety in construction is low.

We train and coach Supervisors and Managers how to identify and observe employee behaviours, and then understand the consequences that are reinforcing the behaviour they have observed.  We then give them the skills to understand how to change that behaviour by changing the consequences. The principles are simple and based upon many years of behavioural research; 80twenty are able to apply these to the business environment.

As those who are 'living the business', Managers and Supervisors will often have fairly accurate ideas about what the positive and negative behaviours are to improve and sustain business performance, 80twenty provides additional skills to identify when they should be used and what the effects of a particular management style will result in.

The M4S Key Features

  • Going beyond 'the plateau' of telling employees to behave more safely, by actually identifying and measuring specific unsafe behaviours.
  • Based around core principles of Applied Behavioural Science
  • Avoids confrontation (although does not replace traditional systems and procedures that are in operation.
  • Effective scoring / measurement
  • Workforce ownership
The M4S Programme Breakdown

To ensure continued motivation whilst training and to demonstrate the benefits of utilising behavioural improvement techniques we undertake a case study unique to the Project leader on a problem being experience in their every day to day work to which the principles are applied as the M4S programme progresses.

The training programme will be tailored to the needs and size of your Company and we do provide overview training to provide the basic principles without the framework for improvement if this will add the most value to your business.

Following any initial discussions, 80twenty will draw up a proposal based upon your business needs and budgets.

The actual Training Programme comprises 3 Days of "classroom" training for Supervisors and Managers where the 7 modules detailed below are fully explored:-
Module 1 - Introduction
  • The Science behind the Principles
  • Consequences the key to Managing Safe Behaviour

Module 2 - Analysis of Behaviour
  • The Power Of Data
  • Identifying the Behaviour Safe/Unsafe
  • Analysing How A Specific Behaviour Is Motivated
Module 3 - Implementation
  • Choosing the Behaviour For Improvement
  • Implementing a Safe Behaviour Motivation Plan
  • Monitoring the behaviour and Project results
Measuring Safe behaviours and Performance Improvements

At 80twenty our expertise in data-based management such as the Six Sigma approach has enabled us to understand and implement effective measurement techniques.

80twenty provide on-going coaching to the 'M4S' trained Senior personnel to ensure that the data is published and to motivate continued improved performance by demonstrating this by making the data highly visible at meetings, briefings and so on with the staff and workforce.

Measurement of unsafe behaviours highlights the areas where behaviour needs to change to reduce accidents and injuries, these areas will be targeted for Behavioural Motivation Plans.

We will happy to visit yourselves to discuss our services and how M4W can benefit your business, following a Consultation a no-obligation proposal for a Behaviour Management programme will be provided.
